NDLEA Denies Assaulting BBNaija’s Khloe

'Let Love Lead,' BBNaija’s Khloe Speaks On Forgiveness

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has denied claims that their operative assaulted BBNaija star, Khloe, at Lagos airport.

This is coming few hours after Khloe took to her social media to claim that she was assaulted by a staff of the agency at the airport, adding that the officer harassed her and seized her phone, called her a bastard and made her miss her flight.

Responding to her allegations Director, Media & Advocacy of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement said;

“its preliminary findings showed that none of its officers assaulted an Air peace airline passenger, Ms. Abiri Oluwabusayo Khloe, at the departure gate of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos in the early hours of today, Sunday 5th December,”

READ ALSO: BBNaija Khloe Reveals She Was Assaulted By An NDLEA Staff

“The passenger had in social media publications alleged a female NDLEA officer harassed and assaulted her. While further investigation of the allegation is ongoing, the following facts have so far been established: At about 12:20am on Sunday 5th Dec, during an outward clearance of passengers going to South Africa by Air peace, a female passenger, Ms. Abiri Oluwabusayo was asked to submit her luggage for a search, which is a regular procedure.

“In the course of searching her luggage, which contains about 8 handbags, Ms. Abiri who obviously came late for the flight as shown on CCTV footage became agitated and hurled a number of unprintable insults at the female officer searching her luggage. This attitude is naturally a red flag that would raise suspicion and equally taken as an attempt to distract the officer.

“Ms. Abiri went further to point fingers in the face of the officer and at the same time pulled out a phone to record the officer in the course of doing her work. At that point, the officer seized the phone from her to stop the distraction but that didn’t stop the passenger who brought out another phone to record their encounter.

“The aggrieved passenger and the public are assured that the NDLEA is a law enforcement agency that upholds discipline among its officers and men, and as such will take further steps to investigate any other evidence made available in the course of the ongoing process.”

Nigeria Drops To 14 As Egypt Tops Africa’s Investment Destinations

The PUNCH reports that Nigeria has dropped from Africa’s top 10 investment destinations to 14 as Egypt remains the number one nation.

This is according to a report by RMB titled, ‘Where to Invest in Africa 2021.’

According to RMB, a division of FirstRand Bank Limited, the ranking is based on countries operating environments.

RMB Africa Economist, Daniel Kavishe, said the pandemic ushered a new world and a new approach to this year’s list.

Kavishe said, “We created a new set of rankings that incorporated some of the unavoidable COVID-19-induced challenges, of which the operating environment score was one.”

According to him, fiscal scores are important indicators of how governments respond to COVID-19.

He said, “The inclusion of a fiscal score in our rankings aimed to score governments’ fiscal positions and provided a basis from which investors can understand specific jurisdictions.

“Although the pandemic brought devastation, it also enabled opportunities for reimagining policies and trade relationships. Increasingly clear now is that home-grown strategies to tackle poverty, inequality and unemployment across Africa must be implemented. If not, all of Africa suffers.”

According to him, capital will flow naturally to economies offering a good mix of opportunity and ease of doing business.

According to the company, the top 10 African countries to invest in are Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Rwanda; Botswana, Ghana, Mauritius, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and Tanzania.

The company ranked Nigeria outside the top 10 at number 14.

The company said, “The sheer size of Nigeria’s economy and large population base has undoubtedly aided the country’s economic environment and has led to an increase in investments in the economy over the past 10 years.

“The country boasts significant hydrocarbon resources and considerable agricultural and mining potential. With fiscal support expected to increase and continue over the next few years, given both the coronavirus shock and oil price collapse, the economy is expected to grow but at a slow and steady pace.

“One of the key tenets for its development will be the efforts that have been made to support small and medium enterprises through monetary policy reform. This should support the country’s efforts as it continues its expansion into sectors such as information technology.”

However, the company said Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil is impacting its economy.

The company said, “Nigeria’s heavy reliance on oil means that the drop in oil prices and production generated by the OPEC+ agreement is strongly impacting the economy. COVID-19 came at a time when the economy was still rebalancing from the drop in oil prices during the 2014 to 2016 period.

“Therefore, a lower drop in reserves, tight liquidity and a weak currency can still be expected. The government, which has been criticised for its slow pace of reform, still faces a myriad of security challenges that destabilise the country, such as the activity of the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in the northeast, forcing many people to flee.”

In 2018 and 2019, Nigeria was ranked in the top 10 (eighth in both years).

Although the company added that the nation’s economy was constrained by a weak policy environment and dire infrastructure provision.

According to the company, Nigeria was ranked 13 in 2017, and ranked number six in 2016.

In 2014, Nigeria ranked as number two and dropped to number five in 2015.

EKSU Students Cry Out As University Voids Over N10m School Fees

Some of the affected students

According to a report by The PUNCH, some students at the Ekiti State University have decried the alleged invalidation of their school fees for the 2018/2019 session by the institution following a malfunction of the school’s portal.

They said the university authorities had asked the affected students to pay another school fees for the session or risk missing exams which start next week.

Sunday PUNCH learnt that many students had problems paying their fees through the portal  in 2019 and met with aprogrammer working with the school.

The programmer  reportedly directed them to a cafe operator on the campus.

While some students allegedly paid their school fees in cash to Sunkanmi, others made transfers into his account after which he generated receipts for them from the portal.

Some weeks later, the portal was said to have crashed and after it was fixed, students were directed to embark on revalidation.

In the process, several students were shocked as they were told that the receipts issued to them were invalid.

One of the victims, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity for fear of being victimised, said over 500 students were affected. Of the number, Sunday PUNCH obtained the list of 113 students whose cumulative school fees ran into over N10m.

The affected female student said, “It all started in the year 2019 (2018/2019 session) when I had issues with my school portal, and I was on the verge of making school fee payment. Without access to the portal, I won’t be able to make any payment. I was referred to the ICT centre to lodge a complaint so that the portal issue could be rectified.

“A staff member of the institution, who was the portal programmer, rectified the issue, and he called the cafe operator to his office to make the payment. It was successful because a receipt was issued to me from my portal and it showed on my dashboard that I paid.

“I took the receipt to the bursar’s office to confirm my payment and it was confirmed successfully. During the first semester examination, a clearance card (exam permit) was given to me to proceed with my examination.

“Later on, the school portal crashed and this led to the revalidation exercise. The process revealed the receipt issued to me via the school portal was invalid.

“Over 500 of us were unable to sit for some of our exams before we were issued temporary revalidation which led to a great number of us failing our exams or searching for our scripts. The school authorities are insisting we repay our tuition fees.”

Another student said the school official and the cafe operator were arrested and handed over to the Department of State Services in Ado Ekiti for proper investigation but were later released on bail.

He added, “Now (2020/2021 session), the school authorities are asking us to pay again. We held a peaceful demonstration against this act of injustice and met with the school deputy vice chancellor, chief security officer and the ASUU chairman. We have no money to pay, most of us have extra year just because of this issue. We really need help; this injustice is killing us.”

The students said they had written petitions to the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, EKSU branch, National Association of Nigerian Students, the state Commissioner of Police, twice and the Office of Ekiti State Special Assistant, Youths/Students Affairs but their efforts had yet to yield positive results.

“Exams will start next week and the school has made it known that whoever does not pay the school fees will not be allowed into the examination halls,” another student lamented.

When contacted on the issue, the spokesperson for the university, Mr Bode Olofinmuagun, said a committee had been set up to look into the case before the exams commenced.

He said, “On the issue of the portal that you mentioned, I think another committee was set up and they are working on it. The exams will start on December 13. Before then, all the issues will be resolved.”

“It is very sad and unfortunate that this kind of attack and others are happening at this time. It seems the insurgents came very close to Maiduguri.

‘Our military have to wake up and ensure adequate surveillance. This is something we should be able to avert. For the insurgents to have come so close to fire rockets, I think there is something wrong that we have to check.

“We have to fortify Maiduguri, as we will continue to do around other cities and towns across the state. We have to ensure adequate patrols on daily basis to avert future attacks,” he said.
