The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has disassociated itself from the activities of a group known as the Biafra National Guard (BNG).
Condemning the activities of the group in a statement on yesterday, the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, pointed out that the actions of the Biafra National Guard do not conform with the fundamental objectives of IPOB, maintaining that IPOB is still a peaceful movement unlike the BNG.
He said: “We have observed the unpatriotic and nefarious activities of this group and we hereby unequivocally dissociate ourself from the group and its activities.
“This group has no link whatsoever with IPOB and doesn’t work for IPOB. IPOB has nothing to do with any group associated with criminality. Our mandate is peaceful restoration of Biafra, anything other than this will have nothing to do with us.
“Our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu does not encourage criminality or any action injurious to the people of Biafra. We don’t encourage extortion or forceful collection of fuel and other lubricants from any petrol station in Biafra land. This is criminality that cannot be condoned in Biafra land.”
Powerful, therefore, threatened that IPOB would deal with any group usurping the process of Biafra restoration, saying that it is not ruled out that politicians my be behind such groups.
“IPOB also abhors hostage taking and demand for ransom which is a common characteristic of Fulani terrorists and Fulani herdsmen and any group associated with such criminality in Biafra land will be resisted by IPOB.
“Anybody or group caught in such barbaric act will be seriously dealt with. Some evil politicians are using criminally minded elements to foment trouble in our land,” he said.
Powerful also warned those using his name and that of IPOB to dupe politicians and members of the public in Anambra State of their money, saying they should desist from it or face dare consequences.
Contrary to speculations, the police authorities have not recalled the erstwhile Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, who has been on suspension since July 31, following his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
There had been reports that Kyari had been secretly recalled by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba. But police sources confirmed that the deputy commissioner of police is still on suspension.
Kyari had been under investigation for allegedly fraternising with a suspected Internet fraudster, Abbas Ramon, commonly known as Hushpuppi.
The FBI alleged that Kyari connived with Hushpuppi to defraud a Qatari businessman of $1.1 million.
While speaking with State House correspondent in Abuja, on Thursday, the IGP said Kyari had been queried, adding that the police were working closely with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Attorney General of the Federation to discharge the appropriate sanction on Kyari.
He also explained that the panel constituted to investigate the case had submitted its report to the SGF, Boss Mustapha, for vetting and advice on the findings.
According to him, the police had only recently received feedback from the SGF and were contemplating their next step.
The IG said, “I have not received any extradition request formally. But I have read from other places that there was an extradition request. I’ve not seen it and that is one.
“Two, when this issue of Kyari started, we took our own action by constituting a panel to look at the allegations that were made against the senior officer.
“The allegations were based on fraternising with Hushpuppi and even receiving some series of instructions on extrajudicial torture and so on. We looked into all these allegations via the committee that was set up by the DIG and we submitted our report to the SGF on the findings of our investigation.
“We just received the legal advice from the office of the Attorney General on what to do next in terms of asking the officer to account for what we have gathered in the course of our investigation.”

Meanwhile, the development has led to increase in prices of transportation as motorists and motorcyclists now bank on the excuse to charge passengers exorbitantly.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari “over his failure to probe allegations that over ₦880bn of public funds are missing from 367 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).”
The suit followed the grim allegations contained in Part 2 of the 2018 Annual Audited Report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation that ₦880,894,733,084.811 was spent by 367 MDAs without any appropriation.
SERAP is, therefore, calling for the prosecution of those suspected to be responsible, and the recovery of any missing or diverted public funds.
According to the suit filed last week at the Federal High Court in Abuja, SERAP is seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari to promptly investigate the alleged missing N881bn of public funds, and to ensure the prosecution of those suspected to be responsible, and the full recovery of any missing, mismanaged or diverted public funds.”
In the suit, SERAP argued that: “complying with constitutional requirements and international standards on spending of public funds would ensure effective and efficient management of public resources, and put the country’s wealth and resources to work for the common good of all Nigerians, adding that “it is in the interest of justice to grant this application, as it would improve respect for the rights of Nigerians, and improve their access to essential public goods and services, which ought to be provided by the indicted MDAs.”
SERAP also argued that: “President Buhari has a constitutional duty to ensure the investigation and prosecution of allegations of corruption, as well as recovery of any missing public funds. Section 15[5] of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended), requires the Buhari administration to abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power.
“Granting the reliefs sought would help to address the adverse consequences of unconstitutional and poor management of public resources on the human rights of poor Nigerians.
“The alleged missing public funds have hampered the ability of the indicted MDAs to meet the needs of average citizens, as the missing funds could have helped the government to invest in key public goods and services, and to improve access of Nigerians to these goods and services.”
Joined in the suit as respondents are the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN; and the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed.
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed at least four members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN) while one of its personnel lost his life.
This is coming a week to the governorship election in Anambra.
According to the Army, the deceased gunmen, who were killed at Nnobi Junction, Idemili South Local Government Area of the State, had engaged the troops of 82 Division conducting Exercise GOLDEN DAWN on Friday in a fierce gun battle before they were overpowered.
Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who disclosed this on Saturday in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja, explained that troops’ actions followed the assailants’ armed attack on personnel of security agencies deployed at Ekwulobia Round About in Aguata Local Government Area of the State.
According to Nwachukwu, the troops swiftly mobilised to the scene and subsequently embarked on pursuit of the criminals along Nnewi-Nnobi road, adding that troops made contact with the fleeing gunmen and engaged them in a firefight that led to neutralising four of the criminals.
He said the troops also recovered two AK-47 Rifles, one GALIL Ace 5.56 x 45 Iwi Gun, one Avofeng Handheld radio and one Black Highlander jeep, saying “sadly, a personnel of one of the security agencies paid the supreme price”.
In a separate operation, Nwachukwu revealed that troops have foiled another attack by IPOB/ESN gunmen at Umunze Checkpoint, in Orumba South Local Government Area.
He noted that the troops overwhelmed the attackers in the shootout that ensued, forcing them to take to their heels, abandoning one Pump Action gun with nine cartridges, one dark blue Ford and four motorcycles, which the troops have recovered.
The Nigerian Army’s spokesman noted that the recent attacks are part of proscribed IPOB’s plan to instil fear into the public and sabotage the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election.
He added, ”The armed forces of Nigeria and other security agencies reassured Nigerians they will not relent in resolutely confronting all criminals intents against the citizenry and national interest.
”Law-abiding citizens are enjoined to continue to go about their daily activities without any fear.
“They are also encouraged to report any unusual activity observed across Anambra State to the nearest security post.”
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the raid on the residence of a justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Peter-Odili, by a group of yet-to-be-identified security operatives.
In a statement on Saturday, NBA President Olumide Akpata listed some of the actions to be taken by the legal body to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
These actions, he explained, are in line with the aims and objectives of the NBA, including the protection and defence of the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Nigeria.
“We will be convening an emergency meeting of the NBA National Executive Committee solely to discuss this issue and take a definitive stand on behalf of the NBA,” said Akpata.
“I will also lead a delegation to the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the relevant heads of security agencies to seek further clarification on the circumstances of this incident.
“Thereafter, the NBA will ensure that all those responsible for this unfortunate incident are brought to book. We must do all that is required to safeguard the independence of our judiciary and indeed protect our hard-won democracy.”
A former president of the senate and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anyim Pius Anyim has revealed that he will run for president in 2023.
Anyim spoke on Saturday at a media briefing in Abuja.
The former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), expressed that there is no rule stopping an aspirant from the south-east from contesting for the seat of the president, whether the party zones the slot to the region or not.
“Posters of my presidential bid and agitations by groups for me to contest flooded the social media in 2020 and I disassociated myself from such calls. I felt that it was too early for such a declaration, to enable the present administration concentrate on governance,” he said.
“Such calls resurfaced in the early part of 2021 and I chose to be quiet over the issue.
“We currently have less than 18 months to the next elections, and I feel the time is ripe to indicate my interest.
“Zoning of such positions was deferred but nothing stops anyone from south-east zone from contesting the presidency even if it is not zoned to it.
“The most important thing is that the party’s national convention is a sort of rebirth for a group of people who have recovered from a setback. The party members are focused and determined.”
“Diverse as we are, it is, however, clear to me that we are at our best when we remember that we must remain focused and disciplined for the sake of our country and for the benefit of our fellow Nigerians,” Tambuwal said.
“In Nigeria, it is tough to remain an item, focused and disciplined, when being an opposition party. The temptation and allure of power can be overwhelming. Some have fallen along the way.”
Tambuwal commended all those “who found the steps to remain focused and disciplined and do the hard work that opposition requires.”
Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo has expressed that he is “completely convinced” that the country has a bright future.
Osinbajo spoke on Saturday at the annual thanksgiving service of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), which held in Jos, the Plateau capital.
Speaking on the importance of speaking positively, Osinbajo said “despite everything we are seeing, the spirit of God is hovering over the face of this nation”.
He urged Christians to continue to trust in God that despite the complexities of the country’s challenges, Nigeria will emerge victorious.
“Every believer is an anointed priest of God. So, unlike any other gathering, those of us who are here are led not by the flesh but by the spirit of God. We rely on the inherent, infallible, word of God — not speculations, not rumours,” he said.
“Indeed, for us, the foundation of truth for us is the word of God. This is why I’m completely convinced that the future of our nation is very bright, very bright indeed. Things are going the way God operates. Our God is a God of complex situations. He steps in when things get complicated. He’s not a man whose options are limited. He has no limits, no boundaries.”

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has stated that he has never seen the country in such a “bad shape” as it is now.
Abubakar spoke on Saturday at the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.
The former presidential candidate also stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government is “ill-equipped” to lead the country.
Atiku expressed that Nigerians still have a chance to turn things around with the support of the PDP.
“Today, our country is going through the most difficult period of its existence. I am 70 years old plus and I can tell you that I have never seen this country in such a very bad shape — so disunited, so much unemployment, so much insecurity,” he said.
“The country is beset by economic and social challenges in all corners along with lingering tensions arising from questions surrounding the very nature of our corporate existence as a nation.
“Nigeria is at the edge of a precipice because of the lacklustre performance, complacency and needlessness of successive administrations culminating in the gross failure of this APC-led government.
“We have a chance now to save the ship for the right course. We have a chance to atone for the mistakes of past leadership in our collective past mistakes. We have a chance to unite the country on a march towards greatness; a chance to seize the opportunity to steer our country towards its rightful position amongst the comity of nations. We can save ourselves, we can save the party and we can save Nigeria together.
“The APC has proven itself to be ill-equipped to lead the nation. They have shown themselves to be the most corrupt, sectional and divisive party that was never prepared to lead this country and never even had an idea of what it takes to lead a diverse, dynamic and multi-religious country like Nigeria.”
The federal government has announced the extension of the ongoing national identification number (NIN) and subscriber identity module (SIM) integration exercise till December 31, 2021.
Minister of communications and digital economy, Isa Panatami announced the approval of the federal government to extend the deadline in a statement issued on Saturday.
The statement was jointly signed by Ikechukwu Adinde, director of public affairs at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and Kayode Adegoke, head of corporate communications at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
“The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), has conveyed the approval of the Federal Government to extend the deadline for the National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification. Citizens and legal residents are urged to complete the process before the end of the year 2021,” the statement reads.
“The decision to extend the deadline was made further to appeals by the Mobile Network Operators and other industry stakeholders, soliciting for a further extension to ensure better compliance with government’s directive and to avoid widening the digital divide.
“The extension would also provide the enabling environment for the registration of Nigerians in remote areas, diaspora, schools, hospitals, worship centres, as well as foreigners, diplomatic missions, those in other areas that were hitherto unreachable, and increase enrolments in countries with a significant number of Nigerians.”
The statement further disclosed that over 66 million unique NIN have been issued, with an average of three to four SIMs per NIN.
