Nigeria’s Federation Still Built On Falsehood 61 Years After Independence, Gani Adams Laments

Nigeria’s Federation Still Built On Falsehood 61 Years After Independence, Gani Adams Laments
Gani Adams

Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has lamented that it is unfortunate that Nigeria’s federation is still built on falsehood 61 years after independence.

He noted that the country has the potential to be great again if the regions are given the autonomy to develop at their own pace.

He stated that such would allow the states to build their security architectures and their respective economies to enhance a true federation.

Adams made his position known in a statement titled, ‘At 61, Nigeria’s federation built on falsehood – Gani Adams’, signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi on Thursday.

The statement partly read, “Many would, no doubt, describe Nigeria as the giant of Africa, but the irony of our present situation in the country is that at 61, Nigeria’s federation was built on falsehood, and that has affected the entire system.

“For instance, the spate of insecurity has reached an alarming state with bandits killing and maiming Nigerians every day.

“The senseless killings, banditry and kidnappings across the land have been a major challenge for the present administration, and we cannot but call for Nigeria to be restructured along regionalism where all the six states in the South-West will control their fortunes and have their destinies in their own hands.

“Insecurity can only be tackled when each region has the autonomy to control their security architectures.”

Babagana Zulum

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum has expressed that he is not in support of State police.

Zulum stated that decentralising the police force will worsen the security challenges in the country.

The governor stated this while delivering a lecture at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau state.

The lecture was entitled ‘Ungoverned Space and Insecurity in the Sahelian Region: Implications for Nigeria Domestic Peace and Security’.

Explaining his stance, the governor said the country is “not matured enough” for state police.

He said it could be used by some governors to harass and intimidate people of other tribes.

“Honestly speaking, I, Babagana Zulum, will not support it, not because I don’t like it, but because of the implications,” Zulum said.

“Nigeria is not mature for state police. Some state governors can use it to wipe away other tribes apart from their tribes.

“So, we have to be very careful. If half of the power given to the Nigeria army, police and others are given to state police, Nigeria will be in problem.”

COVID-19: Six More Persons Die As Nigeria Records 437 New Cases

Nigeria’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 2,701 on Wednesday after six more people battling the disease lost the fight.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed this in an early-morning Facebook post on Thursday while giving an update on the outbreak of the disease in the country.

Four hundred and thirty-seven more cases were recorded in the last 24 hours in 17 states and the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Lagos recorded the highest number of fresh infections – 126 and was followed by Rivers and Kwara States where 76 and new cases were recorded respectively.

Others are FCT – 37, Edo – 32, Kaduna – 30, Anambra – 22, Delta – 22, Osun – 12, Benue – seven, Abia – six, Nasarawa – six, Kano – five, Ekiti – three, Plateau – three, Bayelsa – two, Ogun – two, and Oyo – two.

“Today’s report includes: 126 cases reported from Lagos State are for September 28th (94) and 29th (32), 22 cases reported from Anambra State are for September 28th (12) and 29th (10), zero cases from Bauchi and Sokoto States,” said the NCDC.

It clarified that rather than the six recoveries erroneously reported for Jigawa State on September 24, 12 infected people recovered from the disease.

This brings to 205,484 the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country while those that have been successfully treated are 193,482.

While 9,286 cases are active in various treatment centres across the country as of 9am on Thursday, the NCDC says it has collected and tested a total of 6,040,381 samples.

DSS Denies Involvement In Dr Akunyili’s Killing

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied the involvement of its operatives in the killing of Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili.

The DSS in a statement through its Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya on Thursday said, “the attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to an allegation that its operatives killed Dr. Chike Akunyili.

“Also, the Service was alerted to a social media video claiming that the ‘Nigerian DSS’ murdered security escorts at Nkpor, Anambra State on 28th September 2021.

“The Service hereby denies these allegations and wishes to clearly state that they are spurious and illogical. There was no basis for the DSS to kill the medical doctor and/or fellow law enforcement agents. The Service cherishes life and believes in the rule of law.

“The public should therefore be wary of the false narratives by those desirous of using it (the Service) to cover up their heinous acts. The operations of these hostile elements are already well known in the public space and to the discerning,” the statement added.

The Service noted that desperate efforts to divert attention or deploy reverse “psychology to deceive unsuspecting members of the public has become a stock in trade that has defined their patterns and trends. It is a matter of time before the law will catch up with them”.

The DSS assured the public of partnering with other sister agencies in tracking down those behind the breakdown of law and order in parts of the country with a view to bringing them to justice.

The late Dr. Chike was killed by gunmen on Tuesday alongside his driver and a police escort around Nkpor Junction in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A family source confirmed the news to newsmen on Wednesday.

He was said to have been returning from an event where he received a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife when he ran into the hoodlums at Nkpor and was murdered in cold blood.

UK Police Officer Given Whole-Life Jail Term For Kidnap, Rape, Murder

Wayne Couzens

A British police officer who falsely arrested a woman for breaking coronavirus restrictions, then kidnapped, raped and murdered her, was given a rare whole-life jail term on Thursday.

Judge Adrian Fulford told Wayne Couzens, 48, his offences were “grotesque”, after he snatched Sarah Everard off the streets of south London in March this year.

Everard’s disappearance sparked one of Britain’s most high-profile missing persons investigations and protests calling for better safety for women in public spaces.

But there has been widespread horror and revulsion at the involvement of a police officer, who exploited lockdown restrictions and abused his position of trust to kill.

Couzens, who served with the elite diplomatic protection unit of London’s Metropolitan Police, admitted kidnapping, rape and murder at a hearing in July and was sacked.

Sentencing him at the Old Bailey, in central London, Fulford called Couzens’ actions “devastating, tragic and wholly brutal” and said his victim was “wholly blameless”.

Couzens, who will die in jail, becomes the latest of only 60 criminals who will never be considered for release.

“The misuse of a police officer’s role such as occurred in this case in order to kidnap, rape and murder a lone victim is of equal seriousness as a murder for the purpose of advancing a political, religious ideological cause,” Fulford said.

Everard’s family was in court to see her killer jailed. On Wednesday, they gave emotional statements describing the harrowing impact of her death.

“No punishment that you receive will ever compare to the pain and torture that you have inflicted on us,” her father, Jeremy, told Couzens.

The high-profile case refocused attention on how the police handle complaints of violence against women and girls in Britain.

Questions have been raised about why previous complaints of indecent exposure against Couzens, said to have been a user of sex workers and violent pornography, were not dealt with.

The leader of Britain’s main opposition Labour party, UK Police Officer a former chief prosecutor for England and Wales, said legislation needed to be tightened.

He also called for a review of how Couzens was able to “slip through the net”, despite a series of “warning signs”.

Starmer’s Labour colleague, Harriet Harman, a former women’s minister, called for the resignation of Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick.

“Women must be able to trust the police not fear them. Women’s confidence in police will have been shattered,” she said in a letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel and the Met.

Obiano Places N20m Bounty On Killers Of Dora Akunyili’s Husband, Others

A combination of file photos of late Dr Akunyili and Governor Obiano.

Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has placed a ₦20 million bounty on the perpetrators of the gruesome killing of Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dora Akunyili, and others in the state.

The Governor said that the sum will be awarded to anyone who is able to provide useful information to track the killers.

He said this in a special broadcast after an emergency State Security Council meeting at the Governor’s lodge in Amawbia on Wednesday, while condoling with the Akunyili family, as well as families of others who were killed in the attack.

Governor Obiano condemned the attack, calling on residents to join forces with security agencies to confront the common enemy and protect the state.

Speaking further, he lamented that between Sunday, September 26 to date, over 10 persons have been killed in various areas of the state.

Dr. Chike Akunyili was killed by the gunmen on Tuesday alongside his driver and a police escort around the Nkpor junction in Idemili North, Anambra State.

A family source confirmed the news to Channels Television on Wednesday.

He was said to have been returning from an event where he received a posthumous award of excellence for his late wife when he ran into the hoodlums at Nkpor and was murdered in cold blood.

Meanwhile, the Police have visited the scene, as investigations into the incident and several other recent killings are now ongoing.

VAT Dispute: Appeal Court Grants Lagos’ Request To Join Case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has granted a request by the Lagos State Government, seeking to join Rivers State in the appeal filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The FIRS had filed an appeal at the appellate court to challenge the collection of Value Added Tax by states.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, the court granted the request by Lagos and ordered all processes filed to be served on the Attorney-General of the state, Moyosore Onigbanjo.

The case was later adjourned to October 7 and would be heard at the Appellate Court in Port Harcourt.

On September 16, the court reserved its ruling on the application after Onigbanjo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), took his application for joinder in the suit.

He had informed the panel of judges led by Justice Haruna Tsammani that Lagos was entitled to collect VAT, saying the VAT Act was approved by an order of a court, although it had been annulled.

According to the attorney-general, states that are recognised by the Constitution to collect VAT and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is aware of that fact.

He added that the principles for joinder of a party, seeking to be joined, must be a necessary party that has shown that its interest, legally and financially, would be affected.

While Onigbanjo explained that the case of joinder sought was to prevent multiplicity of action, counsel to the Rivers State government and SAN, Ifedayo Adedipe, supported the application by the Lagos State government.

But counsel to the FIRS and SAN, Mahmoud Magaji, opposed the application for joinder while relying on Section 243 of the Constitution.

He stated that the Constitution does not support applications for joinder and Lagos State was not a party to the suit at the trial court.

Recruitments Into Security Agencies Politicised – Zulum

Zulum: Surrendered Insurgents Should Not Be Rejected To Avoid Endless War
Babagana Zulum

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum Wednesday alleged that recruitments into Nigeria’s security agencies had been politicized, leaving the country’s security in the hands of job seekers.

Zulum was delivering a lecture entitled ‘Ungoverned Space and Insecurity in the Sahelian Region: Implications for Nigeria Domestic Peace and Security’ at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State.

He said: “The major problem is the recruitment process. Those being recruited into the Nigerian Army, police and other security agencies are job seekers. Many of them are there because they don’t have a job.

“Those enlisted 20 years ago are performing well, but these people are looking for employment only. So, there’s no commitment and dedication.

“These days, governors, ministers and other top government functionaries have slots. Nobody is to interview them whether they are qualified or not. Admission into Nigerian Army, police and others are now politicized.”

The governor added: “Unless we get it right, nothing will happen in this country.

“If we want to make progress, we must ensure that we pick the best. If not, we shall continue to recruit the dull ones. We must engage those that can deliver because we have a lot of competent Nigerians.”

He said decentralising the police would worsen the security challenges facing the country, asking the proponents of state police to examine its long term implications before it could be embraced.

“Honestly speaking, I, Babagana Zulum, will not support it, not because I don’t like it, but because of the implications.

“Nigeria is not mature for state police. Some state governors can use it to wipe away other tribes apart from their tribes.

“So, we have to be very careful. If half of the power given to the Nigeria Army, police and others are given to state police, Nigeria will be in problem,” he said.

Governor Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi has expressed that the people of the South-East were responsible for the ongoing crises and killings in the region.

He stated that the lack of love and the pursuit for self were real reasons for the anarchies in the land, adding if the current wave of crises were not addressed, it could lead to trouble.

He stated this during the World Igbo Day celebration at the Christian Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki.

Noting that founding fathers of the region hitherto suffered and fought hard for the freedom of the land, Governor Umahi, who was represented at the occasion by the Secretary to the State Government and Coordinating Commissioner, Dr Kenneth Ugbala, said, “There were people who fought and suffered so much for us to be free as a people; yet there is still fighting among us. This simply tells us something: Igbos are the ones killing themselves.”

He added, “We are our own problems. It’s in our hands to make this region better again. God brought us here to make it a better place for all of us.

“What are we gaining as a people, that we sit-at-home every Monday? Our children were denied the opportunity to sit a national examination; which children in other regions of this country took, because of sit-at-home. We, Igbos, are undoing ourselves. We are the cause of what we suffer today.”

Review of Discord a Social Network Platform

Discord is a cross-platform voice and text chat application intended for use while gaming.

Originally developed by Hammer & Chisel, it was released in 2015 as the primary means of communication between players on the FFXIV: ARR server. The open beta version that I use has been significantly updated since then, but this review will focus on its original design and features only.

Aside from a brief initial tutorial which you’ll pass through within minutes of starting up Discord for the first time, there isn’t much to set up or learn about how to operate the program. Even without reading any help files or taking advantage of any user tips provided during loading screens, anyone qualified for elementary school computer usage should be able to navigate their way around with few problems.

A lot of the reason for that simplicity is the lack of any distinctive interface. There’s nothing to click or tap on, and no unifying visual theme tying everything together into a complete whole. Instead, Discord chooses to divide its interface up into several different ‘pages’ within one window:

  • General – this section includes your text chat input box and all of your profile options, such as account name and avatar selection.
  • Friends list – this page shows you a list of everyone currently online who has added you as a friend, with their statuses (Available/Invisible) and user image next to each entry. You can also access their profiles from here by clicking on their names.
  • Channels – these are designated chat rooms that you can enter and talk in along with everyone else in the same chatroom. You can add or remove channels from your list by clicking them, and open each channel’s settings by right-clicking on it.
  • Server list – this is a simple list of all of the servers you’re currently subscribed to. You can join another server simply by double-clicking one here.
  • Voice page – this section lets you change your voice output device/volume levels for both input and output, as well as test your microphone if applicable.
  • Notifications – this section displays popups whenever someone talks to, adds or removes you from their friend list, joins/leaves/disconnects from a channel, or whenever someone comments on your profile. You can choose to disable these notifications from here if you wish.

There isn’t anything wrong with the general layout of Discord’s interface per se , but it feels a little too bland and barebones for my liking . It doesn’t have that same level of polish that Skype or TeamSpeak had back when they were dominant, nor does it have the sense of style and personality found in Mumble’s design.

The lack of a theme also makes everything feel a bit too segmented and disconnected from each other – I’ve been trying to come up with some sort of metaphor to describe its appearance, but all I could come up with was “a blank sheet” .

In contrast , Mumble’s interface is much more instantly recognisable and clearly laid out . The lack of any avatar picture may be seen as a drawback at first, but it also means that there’s no worrying about whether or not your choice was appropriate or tasteful. It has its own distinctive character that seperates it from the competition in its own way, and I find myself liking it for that even though it lacks some extra features like an in-game overlay etc.

Additionally , Mumble doesn’t feel like something I need to learn in order to get used to – I can click “Connect” , enter my username and password, and start talking within seconds. There aren’t any settings to fiddle with just for the sake of fiddling , nor are there any commands to memorise or actions that I need to discover before using it. In fact, the only thing that’s even slightly complicated is manually setting up a push-to-talk key if you’re not using an Xbox 360 controller , but even then it’s nothing too troublesome .

In contrast, Mumble has the more simplistic approach of “do everything from here” . There’s no extra buttons or menus, so there’s no ambiguity as to where specific options will be found. Even though Discord does have a menu bar for accessing different pages within its interface, it feels restrictive and clunky when compared with Mumble’s standalone window design (both in mobile apps and as a desktop client) .

The lack of uniformity across platforms is also noticeable – even though Discord itself only came out last month , the mobile apps already feel completely different to its desktop version. The PC app leaves a lot of things unexplained for those new to voice chat, and tries to do too many things at once by displaying some sections as separate apps within it .

By comparison, Mumble’s mobile counterparts are more consistent with its desktop design and functionality , albeit on a much smaller scale due to available screen space.

Mumble has a strong sense of identity that makes itself instantly recognisable, whereas Discord fonts feel more bland and generic in comparison . Though having said that, I’m definitely going to give the edge over Mumble when it comes to customizability , because I greatly appreciate being able to adjust the size of the chatbox , choose how my picture is displayed , or even have my own choice of background image .

There are not many options for customising the Discord interface . By comparison , Mumble has a lot more to play around with, including layout and theme changes as well as making your own custom emoticons. This is perhaps largely due to the fact that Mumble’s user base consists mostly of gamers – it makes sense that they would prefer something that caters to their needs better than generic cross-platform software.

Mumble wins out over Discord when it comes to customization, but it also takes longer to start up since you need to log in first on top of downloading it. As someone who usually only uses voice chat every so often, this isn’t too much of an inconvenience for me personally.

If you go by the number of features on offer , Discord is clearly superior with its extensive list of options . It covers text channels , voice chat, in-game overlays , built-in game launchers and more. Mumble has some nice additional features like support for multiple channels in one window, or its own overlay that works in many games (albeit with varying degrees of success depending on the chosen game) .

Mumble’s main menu is actually quite similar to Discord’s interface design – it consists entirely of various sections jumping out at you from a single page (but who needs style when there’s function?) . Now while may look overwhelming at first glance, but I found it rather easy to navigate around after a while.

It’s clear that Discord was designed with gamers in mind , considering its focus on providing an all-in-one chatbox , voice-chat system and game launcher. Meanwhile, Mumble seems to have been built for the Twitch community, even though there are non-gaming related channels as well . One example of this is how many emoticons are available – Discord has around 100 by my estimate, whereas Mumble offers over 2000.

Mumble takes the lead here due to having more features than Discord can offer – including an option for uploading your own custom glyps if you want to make them yourself. While not everyone might see the need for such a feature, if you’re part of a large community then it can be extremely useful.

The settings menu for Discord is quite simple – only offering the most basic of customization options. Mumble’s settings are pretty much identical , but I find them easier to navigate since everything is in its own section with no jumping around required . This might not sound like an important detail, but anyone who uses both programs will understand why this makes all the difference when you want to make quick changes in your settings.
