Zenith Bank’s profit after tax rises by 5% in Q1 2021

Our Reporter

Zenith Bank Plc’s Profit After Tax (PAT) went up by 5% to N53.1 billion in the first quarter of this year despite the economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank’s unaudited results for the quarter have shown.

The bank’s PAT for the corresponding period last year was N50.5 billion.

The unaudited statement of account was presented to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday.

The statement also shows that the Group’s Profit Before Tax (PBT) grew by 4%, from N58.8 billion to N61.0 billion in the same period.

The profitability was driven by the optimization of the cost of funds and improvement in non-interest income. The Bank’s cost of funds reduced significantly from 2.6% in March 2020 to 1.1% in March 2021.

This was also reflected in interest expense which dropped by 45% from N32.8 billion to N18.0 billion over the same period. Non-interest income increased by 10% from N46.6 billion to N51.2 billion, driven by growth in credit-related fees and fees on electronic products.

Non-interest income was boosted by the increase in fees and commission income, which resulted from the increased volume of transactions across all the bank’s channels.

Cost of risk dropped from 0.6% in March 2020 to 0.5% in March 2021, which affirms the bank’s prudent risk management, even as gross loans increased by 2% from N2.92 trillion to N2.98 trillion in Q1 2021.

The bank’s customer acquisition strategy and the effectiveness of its electronic platforms and digital channels enabled it to deliver a N54 billion increment in the savings account balance, which is solely retail.

Customer deposits grew by 6% from N5.34 trillion in December 2020 to N5.68 trillion in March 2021. Transactions on electronic channels also grew astoundingly as new customers continue to be attracted to the Bank’s various user-friendly digital platforms.

The bank expects that the ongoing economic recovery and improvements in the yield environment will translate into improved numbers for the Group.

This is expected to be supported by local and international COVID-19 vaccination campaigns, rising commodity prices, and global economic growth of up to 6%, as estimated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Apostle Okiki Jesu Reveals Next US President, Caution Biden On Sickeness

The founder of the Christ Apostolic Miracle Ministry, Apostle Paul Okikijesu, has that a woman will soon become President of the United States of America.

Naija News understands that the popular Nigerian prophet revealed this in his April prophecy compilation made available to newsmen on his behalf by Prophet Frank Akanbi. The prophet warned US President Joe Biden against sickness that may remove him from the honourable seat.

According to Okiki Jesu, the Lord is ready to lift up the glory of America between May and September 2021. He, however, warned that Biden might not complete his term if he failed to acknowledge God and do what is right in the next six-month probatory period.

Okiki Jesu’s prophecies about America and Joe Biden read thus:

“Thus says the Lord: A woman will soon become the President of America for a brief period.

“Thus says the Lord: I will lift up the glory of America between May and September 2021.

“Thus says the Lord: If President Biden is obedient, honours I the Lord, and does what is right within his six months probationary period; then he will successfully complete his term in office.”

“Thus says the Lord: President Biden should be cautious, and utilize the wisdom of I the Lord; so that he will not use sickness to govern America.”

Okiki Jesu further revealed that Biden should put his trust in God as powerful people in authority will betray and disappoint him. He said: “Thus says the Lord: President Biden should rely and lean on I the Lord; because people will betray and disappoint him.

“Biden should be careful for the Presidents/Head of States of these countries: Iran, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, Jamaica, Cuba, and India.

The prophet added: “Thus says the Lord: President Biden should not lean on the knowledge of the leaders of the following Nations: Iran, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France, Jamaica, Cuba, and India. Though the situation of the United Kingdom is slightly different from others; however, President Biden should beware of the advice of the Presidents/Heads of States of these Nations; else, the future of America will be ruined, and the Nation will return to slavery.”

Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has dragged Fr. Ejike Mbaka of the Spiritual leader of the Adoration Ministry, alleging that Mbaka had asked the president for contract slots but was rejected, Naija News reports.

The presidential aide while reacting to the call by the Spiritual leader of the Adoration Ministry to President Buhari to resign his position or be impeached, said Mbaka once brought three contractors to the president but Buhari insisted that due process must be followed.

“Father Mbaka is everything apart form what he claims to be… an outsider distilling the avalanche of verbiage will be surprised that after supporting the President two times to win the Presidency, Father Mbaka has made a complete U-Turn, preposterously asking President Buhari to resign or be impeached,” Shehu claimed in a statement released on Friday, April 30.

2. Niger State Communities Negotiate N20m ‘Peace Deal’ With Boko Haram

The Department of State Service, has been called on by the Peoples Democratic Party to invite the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, for questioning.

The PDP said the DSS should ask Akpabio to “name politicians in the All Progressives Congress that are behind the acts of terrorism and banditry ravaging our nation.”

According to the party, “there is self-professed evidence that Senator Akpabio is privy to certain terrorism-related information which he must be made to share with the DSS as well as other security agencies.”

The development which was confirmed to newsmen in Abuja earlier by Dr Chioma Ejikeme, the Executive Secretary, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), revealed that that the approval means the PTAD had been empowered to start the upward adjustment of all pensioners’ benefits.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, has sued a former spokesman for the party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Kassim Afegbua, for defamation of character.

Recall that Afegbua had dragged Secondus before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practice and Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) over the management of the finances of the party.

Afegbua alleged that much of the financial transactions of the PDP under Secondus have been shrouded in mystery and accused the leadership of a deliberate attempt to short-change the party in the build-up to the 2023 general elections.

24 years of sweetness for Pastor Oritsejafor and wife

By Olushola Ricketts

If the Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, needs an introduction in a public event, he certainly doesn’t need any in Christendom. He was the former Presidents of two highly respected Christian bodies – Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

In celebrating 24th anniversary of his marriage to his heartthrob, the Warri-based cleric used the opportunity to shower praises on his wife, Helen Oritsejafor.

Oritsejafor wrote: “My darling wife, a woman of substance, a virtuous woman. I thank God for the day I met you. You did not only make me a better person, you turned my world around for good. You gave me the most amazing children anyone could ever wish for. I celebrate our union on this day of our 24th wedding anniversary…”

Pastor Oritsejafor and his beautiful wife got married in 1997 and the union is blessed with three lovely children.

Gov Ortom no longer cares

UnderTow

With Benue a favourite hunting ground for kidnappers and murderers, Governor Samuel Ortom has had just about enough. He cannot be blamed; he was pushed to this point. Only two months ago, he raked Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State over the coals for unguarded and insensitive comments made by the latter in league with the now subdued Sheikh Gumi. On Tuesday, he gave the presidency a mouthful. His words: “What is happening now, to me, is very clear; Mr President is just working for these Fulanis to take over the whole country… The body language, the action and inaction of Mr President shows that he is only the President of Fulani people; I have known this… We are becoming a banana republic, if we have a president who gave the security agencies order to shoot on sight anyone wielding AK-47, and the Minister of Defence came out to say that they cannot shoot on sight… so who is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces?”

On Wednesday, he explained further: “It is an unfortunate development that what is happening, if the federal government had taken a proactive step, we will not be where we are… It means we don’t have a government… They no longer come here with their cattle because they want to suck blood… They are not bandits. They are Fulanis. We saw them and heard them speak the language.”

Read Also: Killings: Buhari sad, disappointed over Ortom’s attacks

Responding to his accusations, the presidency limply and unconvincingly stated that the president was deeply disappointed with the governor and that no responsible government would be happy with the loss of lives of its citizens. In a word, said the presidency, the government swore an oath and it was going to fulfil it so Mr Ortom should cooperate. Big words, small actions. Following this, the presidency went on the offensive to misfire — but fire nonetheless– political missiles at the hapless governor, accusing him of divide-and-rule tactics.

Unfortunately for the Buhari administration, Mr Ortom’s statements were a polite representation of the true sentiments of Nigerians. The enemy is not Governor Ortom, neither is it any of those who have lost their lives needlessly. The enemy is not the university students who are being picked off like lilies in the field, nor is it soldiers whose lives are being offered up as sacrifices to bloodthirsty marauders and insurgents from neighbouring countries. The presidency is its own worst enemy with its consistent armoury of silence, denial and inaction. The battle is not within; it is without. Until the presidency’s spokesmen have tangible messages of substantive hope, no one wants to hear what they have to say. Mr Ortom is too injured to care anyway; but, alas, Nigerians somehow care even less.

A governor and his prophecies

Sentry

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, is indeed a man with many caps. The successful businessman with interests in oil and gas as well as real estate, has established himself as a force to reckon with in politics; what with his elections, first as a senator and now governor.

But if you think the Iperu-Remo born politician is all about the board room and government, then you are wrong. At the weekend, he revealed another of the many feathers in his cap to the audience at a religious programme, when he took the podium and dished out two strong prophecies.

Abiodun, while speaking at the 108th Nigeria Baptist Convention held at the Baptist International Conference Centre, Lufuwape Town, along Lagos-Ibadan highway said: “I may end up on the pulpit after I have served as governor for eight years.”

Packed into that single sentence are answers to two crucial questions many people within and outside Ogun State are seeking answers to.

First, the governor predicted flawlessly that he will win re-election in 2023 and go ahead to govern the state for another term of four years. This will interest all the aspirants currently running around ahead the next election. It will also interest those opposed to his administration.

Secondly, he has foretold what he is most likely to do after leaving office. Contrary to permutations within and outside his camp, Abiodun may not be heading to the senate after all. This is a piece of ‘prophecy’ that will also help some APC chieftains in planning their own political moves.

Anambra 2021: Did attack slow Soludo down?

Sentry

Last February, former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, declared his intention to service Anambra State, after serving Nigeria and the world in different capacities for decades. He announced the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as his platform of choice.

Exactly a month after his entrance into the race for the November guber election, gunmen attacked him in his hometown, Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of the state. They killed three policemen attached to him and abducted the state’s Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne. The attack took place during an interactive session between Soludo and Isuofia youths.

The police made some arrests and the former CBN governor recounted his near death experience for days unending. His camp later reassured his supporters that the attack will not dampen his morale ahead of the election. But some observers of the state’s politics say it appears Soludo has slowed down after the incident.

But a source close to the former CBN governor told Sentry that not only is he still in the race, he remains the candidate to beat. “What do you mean by slowing down? We have done so much without making noise. Yes, the attack jolted us as humans but it is not enough to make us lose focus,” he claimed.

Old wives fables and couples’ sex life

By Funmi Akingbade

I can still recollect vividly years ago when my first cousin was getting married. Preparations were in top gear; all had to be perfect because she was the daughter of a highly respected captain.

A night before her ‘Spinsters Eve’ her mother called her into the bedroom to give her the final word of advice. ‘His meals must be served on time, wholesome, attractive and inviting. You must be a neat and good cook; because the only way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,’ she said.

Most wives-to-be in this part of the world must have heard it said once or twice that the ‘only way to a man’s heart is through his stomach’. Well, the truth is that this is an overstretched half-truth. Many a wife has come to realise that, even when she feeds her husband well with the best delicacies that money can buy, what will really rein him in for good and ensure that he stays indoors most of time – especially on the weekends – is how well she takes care of him in bed.

Wives, no matter what you think, it is what you do in bed and in other matters, apart from food, that will guarantee a sealed deal between you and your husband. I am not saying that giving him good erotic ‘one-in-town-sex is the ‘only’ way to set your marriage on the path of bliss. What I mean is that everything else could amount to nothing without good financial bedrock and great sex. Actually, sex is so important to your husband, that it will be unwise not to live up to his expectation in bed.

Most wives were not born with the ability to make their husbands look great in bed, or to make them scream their heads off in the heat of the action. It doesn’t hurt to appreciate the fact that sex is an art that could be learned and perfected by wives who are sincere about making their marriages successful.

For this reason, I want to talk about what every wife who wants to keep her husband should know. They are little things that we take for granted, which, frankly speaking, make a world of difference between satisfying our men sexually, or alienating them and thereby, giving room to unnecessary quarrels in the home.

To begin with, if there is one place in your home that you need to pay a lot of attention to, it is the bedroom. Wives should keep their bedroom neat at all times. The bedroom is the wife’s empire and office of authority where she takes sexual powers into her hands, influences and control her husband at will and where her laws are executed.

Make it a point of duty to change the arrangement and colour of your bedroom quarterly. Nothing kills passion faster than faded, unappealing and ugly grandma-type underwear, or cheap, low quality brassieres that sag.

Invest in good and sexy lingerie that will not only bring an appreciative response from your husband, but ensure that you get his undivided attention. After all, what do you want from him – devotion and uninterrupted moments?

Wise women understand the need to turn the bedroom into one unpretentious sex theatre. Everything in your bedroom must look, smell and feel erotic, passionate, colourful, calming, inviting and sexy – from the beddings to the décor and right down to the lighting. It is important to eliminate distractions by restricting, for example, the television set to the sitting room (where it really ought to be) and ensuring that books remained in the study. Your bed is not an extended laundry room where the remnant of your children’s clothing are carelessly dumped, nor a nursery room that is drenched, dripping wet, soaked and saturated with the filth of urine.

The bedroom should only be for making romantic, erotic and sexual conversations, coddling, sleeping in a peaceful manner and for hot, unforgettable sex. Nothing else is acceptable.

Mothers don’t tell us to flaunt our bodies before our husband, but this is one of the ways to his heart. Flaunt your God-given body seductively before your husband because it is your unique gift to him. A confident display of your body in a seductive manner is a sure-fire turn-on for any man, and quite honestly, chances are he will not really care that your figure is not drop-dead, come-hither type.

It will not cost you a dime to be adventurous in your own bedroom. It is the perfect place to actualise your sexual fantasy. While you are at it, remember that going through the same routine all the time will lead both of you nowhere. Therefore, it is important to break the repetitiveness by trying out something new.

For example, if you always have sex before turning out the lights, you can try it in the morning as soon as you wake up from sleep. If your man is always positioned on top during sex, surprise him with a bit of bedroom acrobatics. If he is always the one who makes the first move, now is the time to turn the tables round and take the initiative for a change.

Go all out to flavour up your sex life. Dream up new ideas. Doing this will not make you look like a slut, rather it will transform you into your husband’s dream. Believe me, with most men, there’s nothing that’s as thrilling as a wife with a healthy sexual appetite and a heart that is willing to try out new ideas in bed. Anybody can cook better than you and anyone can feed your man well, but nobody should be able to give him great sex; the moment that happens you have lost the man.

Mothers don’t tell us to flirt with our husbands, but flirting could spice up your sex life. Wife, form a habit of flirting with your husband all the time. When you put on your alluring airs, you are indirectly him that you are always interested in his sexual prowess; men react positively to this kind of attitude.

Mothers say respect your husband, but they never tell us to look at them with tempting eyes.  The way you look at your husband is very important. This is because glances could generate an exchange of sexual energy.

Dressing seductively could eventually get your husband fired up sexually, even though he would pretend initially not to notice. Any wife that is serious about winning the attention of her husband and getting into his heart ought to keep a sexy kit handy and make sure that all the items are available anytime, anywhere and at strategic points in the car, kitchen, and bed sides.

Most husbands are frequently under sexual pressure. A recent research revealed that an average man thinks about sex at least ten to twelve times in a day and ejaculates frequently when they are beside an attractive lady. It does not matter whether you are newlywed, a nursing mother, a menopausal spouse. What matters is that you must treat the matrimonial bed like a bona fide business and make it one. You can even be a little mysterious sexually. The fact is if a wife arouses her husband’s curiosity, it is guaranteed he will always be back for more.

You voice your fantasy too! Mother says you would ‘be looked at as a ‘spoilt girl’. But creating sexual scenarios in your mind, sharing and practicing them with your spouse is never a bad way into his heart. Experts say all living beings have sexual fantasies; many imagine themselves enjoying erotic moments with their spouses in strange places at strange times and so on. Sharing sexual fantasies with your husband is a way of heightening and intensifying erotic potential by showing your husband possibilities that he has never considered before. In turn, this will open the door to his heart and a lifetime of sexual ecstasy.

Men love women who behave well because good behaviour is like an appetizer to a beautiful sexual life. Unfortunately, this is one area where most wives miss it. Most women hardly understand that heartfelt verbal compliments or words of appreciation have their unique effect on any relationship. Words of admiration and compliments are greater motivators than negative speech. When husbands receive comforting words from their wives, they are far more likely to be motivated to reciprocate beautifully on their sexuality.

Most men have sexual problems that often rub off badly on their self-confidence and which they lack the courage to confront. Sometimes they complain of premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, weak erection and loss of libido. When wives encourage their husbands their actions act like catalysts for them to face any challenges with great hope.

A lot of the complaints I have received from men about the size of their sex organs is primarily initiated by their wives’ sarcastic criticism and comments. However, with 36-hour-of-freedom or great Cialis, premature ejaculation is becoming outdated, while the herbs from Vietnam are taking care of weak erection and erectile dysfunction.

Our men will always interpret our sexual messages to them from the tone of our voices and body movement, not the words we speak. When what we say to them connotes condemnation and judgment we send them away from our beds on indefinite leave and make them sexually impotent. Good speech goes a long way to improving a man’s libido and creating a pathway to his heart.

Great sex is like a basic chemical reaction between spouses, so give your husband the best sex so ever. The best sex lasts between seven and thirteen minutes. According to a study published in a journal, medical researchers who surveyed peoples bedroom preferences says three minutes is too short, five to ten minutes is adequate and 30 minutes is too long. For now, keep your sex passion aflame.

QUESTION ONE

I am a new bride, though I have been sexually active few months to my wedding, I am worried over some things. Why do I get more vaginal infections now that I am married? Should I tell my husband that I am infected? Is it okay to have sex with the condition, because the man is just all over me?

During sex, your husband’s penis can propel rectal bacteria present near your vaginal opening into your urethra. Peeing after sex and cleaning your genital area with soap before sex will kill those bacteria. Yes, do tell him, just to assure him that the condition is harmless and poses no risk to his health; because they are rarely sexually transmitted disease and healthy husbands almost never develop them. With yeast infection, the vaginal tissues become inflamed, having sex further increases the irritation and slows down the healing process. Wait three days till the infection clears up before having sex, since symptoms such as burning, itching, and lack of lubrication could make sex very uncomfortable.

QUESTION TWO

My husband’s libido has totally tapered off in the past few months and I can’t figure out why. I know I haven’t changed, but he’s now seldom able to rev his engine. He’s having some financial issues, so I can’t really suggest a romantic time-out together to reignite his flame. What do you think the problem is?

It could be number of things: a medical issue, depression, air pollution or stress. I think you actually provided a pointer that could answer your question; the lack of money – it has a tremendous effect on a man’s ego, which means it also has a tremendous effect on his penis. Therefore, your husband is most likely to be depressed by his current lack of finances.

Unfortunately, there’s not enough lingerie in the world that would solve his real problems. So focus on lifting his spirits while avoiding the subject of money as much as possible. Suggest low-key outings and introducing him to Cialis 36-hour-of-freedom and Vietnam herbs to boost his libido. This would prove to him that you love him enough to see him through his rough patch.

Rotimi Salami: I’m a success with love from female fans

Rotimi Salami has grown over the last decade to become one of the popular faces in the Nigeria movie industry widely referred to as Nollywood. The actor and producer, who features in both Yoruba and English speaking films opens up on his marriage, relationship with female fans, as well as his highs and lows in this interview with ADENIYI ADEWOYIN.

How would you describe your passion for acting?

Acting is just a way of life for me. You live your life, you’re happy, I live mine and I’m happy too. Our day to day life, that’s the way acting is to me.

You are also a producer, why don’t you put out movies like your colleagues do?

When it comes to filmmaking, you just can’t decide to start producing movies because every other person is producing, if you do not find the proper source to make a film yet. The few movies I’ve done I’m still not satisfied because I feel like I do not have adequate resources to make them good enough because money is never enough but then having something close to having a comfortable shoot – I don’t have so I have to take my time.

What are the things you consider as a setback to shooting these types of movies you mentioned?

Basically funds, finance is the major thing when it comes to making a good film.

You feature in both Yoruba and English speaking films, which do you prefer?

I don’t prefer any, I’m an actor so any job that comes in whatever language I do it. If I act speaking English, Yoruba or Igbo, at the end of the day, I’m still acting, so I do not prefer one above the other. All I have to do is do what I’m paid to do and do it very well.

But these are of different environments though same industry, hence, which do you feel more relaxed with?

I feel relaxed with any. If you call yourself an actor, I don’t see any discomforting zone, you should be able to do your thing notwithstanding the environment. The only thing you may likely have challenges sometimes with is the kind of roles that you may likely play in any of the scripts. Yes, if you talk about the environment, you are right. Of course, it’s just like dealing with people on a daily basis, you meet different people with different characters so it depends on the kind of people that I meet on a particular set that will determine whether I will enjoy the set or not but either way, I have a way of making myself enjoy the set.

How do you combine marriage and acting?

I always tell people that I am blessed because my wife is a thespian, so she understands the job and when it comes to shuffling my wife made it a lot easier for me because we communicate often. She could even see one booty and send the picture to me like “babe see this yansh” and I could be working and see something and send to her as well so we communicate like we are together and I talk to my kids thank God for video call and all that. For me it’s a way of life like I said earlier.

You seem to be very close to your wife that you can share anything with her

(cuts in) Yes actually my wife is my friend and my kids are my friends also.

Are there no things you hold back from your wife despite your closeness?

In all sincerity, that is why you should court before getting married. Now it’s advisable that when you court, try as much as you can to be real, if you are real, it helps you a whole lot to be able to show out everything that you are and see if your partner can manage you like that because the truth about it is that nobody is perfect, everybody will have the best character to suit the other person but we can actually condole and get used to one another and it becomes a lifestyle already. So if there’s anything I’m doing today with my wife in terms of communication, we’ve been doing it since we were dating so it made a lot of things quite easy for me and I will barely hold anything back. The only thing is I will just watch her mood to see if it’s the best time to raise a particular topic or gist.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve shared with your wife?

I shared all my love escapades in the past with her just as we got into the relationship. When I say I shared everything that includes the sex styles too. It can be crazy sometimes but truth be told if it’s a forever thing for you then let him or her see the weirdest part of you. No gist about me is new to my wife.

How often do you get DMs from female fans?

Per hour and I’m not even joking. But then I do not see it as anything weird, I’m grateful to God for that. You are not a celebrity if you are not being celebrated, you can’t keep moving if you are not being appreciated, you will not grow if they don’t like what you do. The truth is that they say anything that a woman has a hand in brings forth success, so if I’m loved by women, then I’m a success.

Does your wife know about the Direct Messages?

Yes she does, I show her a few.

Won’t she be jealous?

The truth about it is that how do I stop a person from sending half nude pictures to me? The way I react to it is the most important thing. I was a weird guy before I got married, I explored so it’s not really new to me. Handling it is easy, all thanks to my mom, she taught me a lot.

What project are you working on for the rest of the year?

I have a coming television series, previous episodes have aired on Africa Magic. It’s ready now and will premiere very soon. It is titled ‘Jack of All Trade.’ Also before the year runs out, I’m looking at shooting a cinema project.

Talking about cinema movies, which one brings more money between cinema movies and home videos?

When it comes to Return Of Investment (ROI), the one that brings more money if well done and well executed is cinema but it is more stressful and getting it right around here is a little tricky because if you make for example two hundred million maybe what will come to you is forty to fifty million, the rest goes to the distributors, the cinema, it goes to PR so there are lots of things that consumes money when it comes to that but at the end of the day if it goes right sometimes it could be better than that. What people don’t know is that it takes almost the same time to get your return of investment on cinema movies like home videos. It’s not like a shorter time for your regular movies. Only if you have the funds and you know the whereabouts on how to go about what you want to do, I will say oh do a cinema movie just because of my own wealth of experience but if you are a beginner and you know you want to test the waters, a cinema movie is not the best for you to do except you have a hand that is capable of taking care of that.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

I take risks every time I think I am even at risk myself. My very first attempt at making an audio visual was in 2007, it never saw the light of day. Another attempt was in 2010 when I shot my first series ‘Kuti’s Career Palace’, it came on TV in 2013, 2014 I shot a season two with close to about five million in cash and in human value and the last day of shoot, the hard drive that I had the job in crashed and I was almost going to give up and let go. For like seven months, the money I was getting from advertising, I was trying to use to repair the hard drive but all to no avail. Months after we got a nomination for the same series for best comedy writer. I also risk my first cinema movie too in 2017.

What about outside filmmaking?

Majorly, I’m just film, the risk I take outside will also have something to do with film.

Does that mean you don’t do other things?

I don’t do anything apart from film though I intend to start doing things. Maybe real estate.

May Day: Workers never had it so bad, says Atiku

By Sanni Onogu and Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday lamented what he called the persistent and frightening economic decimation of the Nigerian working class in the face of appalling inflation and declining living standards.

He described the conditions of Nigerian workers as worrisome in a hostile economic environment like Nigeria; a situation he said makes saving and survival almost impossible.

His views were contained in a statement he issued to salute workers on the occasion of this year’s Workers’ Day.

According to him, “even what we call basic food items are unaffordable, and we are in a situation where the price of a bag of rice is nearly at par with the value of our minimum wage.”

The former Vice President added that the “increase in the national minimum wage has been matched or neutralised by astronomical inflation that is accelerating at a breathtaking pace almost daily. Even the locally produced foods are prohibitively expensive.”

“The Nigerian workers have never had it so bad. The impacts of the lockdown and worsening inflation have taken their heaviest toll on the working class. The situation is so bad that they are now living from hands to mouth.”

The Wazirin Adamawa also explained that in the face of low morale and poor motivation, productivity will inevitably take a nose dive.

”This situation”, he said, “will only create favourable conditions for corruption and aggravate depression and mental health problems among civil servants.”

”Let me be clear: these challenges of economic survival are not limited to the civil servants alone. They affect the working class at all levels, including artisans and other low income groups that are struggling desperately to put food on the table in the face of declining incomes and rising inflation,” the former Vice President added.

He suggested that in the face of widespread extreme poverty and declining incomes among the economically vulnerable Nigerians, political office holders should urgently review the cost of governance in order to bring them in line with our economic realities and the sorry conditions of average citizens.

In his own message to workers, the Senate President Ahmad Lawan, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja, urged the organised labour to always look at the larger picture and consider higher national interest in their responses to government policies and actions.

Lawan said: “I felicitate with the Nigerian workers on this occasion of the Worker’s Day of International Solidarity and Unity.

“The Nigerian Labour Movement has a proud heritage beginning from the heroic contributions of its founding fathers like Pa Michael Imodu and his contemporaries in the struggle for the independence of Nigeria and emancipation of workers and the masses.

“The Nigerian workers across the generations since then have continued to drive economic productivity, nation-building and democratic governance in the country.

“I commend their patience, understanding and also their resilience in the face of the current challenges that our nation is facing.

“The National Assembly believes in the well-being and welfare of the workers and will always provide legislative support for every effort to tackle their challenges and improve the work environment.

“I assure you of the resolute commitment of the Ninth Senate to its mantra of “Work for Nigeria.”

“By this, we will continue to stand by the Nigerian workers to rid our statute books of anti-labour laws and promote legislations that will make our society a better place for the working people.” Lawan said.

Glo extols public, private sector workers

Telecommunications service provider, Globacom, extolled the doggedness and perseverance of Nigerian workers amidst local and global economic realities confronting them.

In a statement issued in Lagos to felicitate with public and private sector workforce on May Day, Globacom described Nigerian workers as “the most resilient in the world,” noting that they have shown exceptional dedication in difficult times.

The statement added: “Globacom congratulates Nigerian workers as they join their counterparts all over the world to mark another Workers’ Day.

“Their commitment to nation building and their resilience over the years is well appreciated.

“We salute their dedication and uncommon courage and wish to use the occasion of the Workers’ Day celebration to urge them to rededicate themselves to the social and economic development of the country.”

It called on workers to remain dedicated to duty and strive for excellence in the work place, as well as to continue to contribute towards building a strong work culture that will help Nigeria achieve its dream of being an industrialised and prosperous nation.

The telecommunication company encouraged Nigerian workers to remain committed to the noble cause of building a strong, virile and prosperous nation, adding that it was convinced that the challenging times being experienced globally and particularly in Nigeria would soon be over.

APC eulogises workers for patriotic zeal

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said Nigerian workers remain the key drivers of the socio-economic policies and infrastructural revolution of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

In a statement by the party’s Secretary, Caretaker Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, in Abuja yesterday, the party commended the organised labour for shunning unpatriotic influences in the course of agitation for workers’ welfare.

Commending the patriotic zeal of the organised labour, the party said: “From the administration’s several social investment programmes targeted at citizens living on the margin to the Economic Sustainability Plan which fast-tracked the country’s recovery from recession and cushioned the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian workers are key partners and are playing important roles in ensuring the administration’s successful implementation of these programmes and many more.

“In line with our election promises to Nigerian workers, the President Buhari administration successfully implemented the improved minimum wage and has embarked on a mass housing programme benefitting thousands. This government’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers is tested and proven. We will do more.

“As the President Buhari government implements quick and permanent strategies to check cases of insecurity, we assure workers and indeed all Nigerians of the government’s resolve to protect the lives and property of all.

“While the APC seeks the patience and cooperation of Nigerian workers, we call for greater patriotism from everyone.

“We wish Nigerian workers a peaceful celebration.”

Mbaka attacking Buhari because of failed contract bid — Presidency

By Bolaji Ogundele and Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

The Presidency on Friday fired back at outspoken Enugu Catholic Church priest, Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka, claiming that his recent diatribe at President Muhammadu Buhari stemmed from a failed contact bid.

The President’s party, All Progressives Congress (APC), also joined in the fray, branding Mbaka’s call for Buhari’s impeachment ungodly, and threatening to ‘expose’ him to the Pope.

Mbaka, until recently a strong supporter of the President, stunned many Nigerians earlier in the week when he said Buhari has failed the nation and should quit or be impeached.

“Nigerians are crying because there’s no security in the country. The National Assembly should impeach the President if he doesn’t want to resign,” he had said.

But responding to Mbaka on Friday, Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the clergy was angry with the President for allegedly refusing to circumvent contract award procedures for him.

Mbaka, according to the President’s spokesman, had requested audience with the President but to the chagrin of Presidential aides, he came with three contractors, demanding that he be compensated for his support with contracts to his friends.

The President was said to have asked appropriate authorities to attend to the demand in accordance with laid down procedure, a response which allegedly did not settle well with the clergyman.

Shehu said: “An outsider distilling the avalanche of verbiage will be surprised that after supporting the President two times to win the Presidency, Father Mbaka has made a complete U-turn, preposterously asking President Buhari to resign or be impeached.

“Here is the point of departure: Father Mbaka asked for a meeting, and to the shock of Presidential Aides, he came accompanied by three contractors. The President graciously allowed them in, and to everyone’s surprise, Father Mbaka asked for contracts as compensation for his support.

“Anyone familiar with President Buhari knows that he doesn’t break the laid down rules in dealing with contracts or any other government business for that matter. He requested the appropriate authorities to deal with the matter in accordance with laid down rules.

“Inside the Villa, discretion prevailed, that if those pictures and requests were made public, the followers will turn against the religious leader. None of it was released. Now, this is what is eating Father Mbaka,” the statement claimed.

APC: We’ll report you to Vatican

Moments before the allegation against Mbaka by the Presidency, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had daubed Mbaka’s statement as ungodly.

It threatened to report him to the Pope and the Vatican for committing acts capable of causing instability in the country.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena, said the clergy’s call for the impeachment of Buhari could instigate the people against their leader and cause disaffection for the government.

Nabena said it was unfortunate that a man of God “who is supposed to deploy all known spiritual means of averting crisis” would rather threaten a democratically elected government for “his own personal benefit while pretending to be speaking for the people.”

Citing Mark 4: 35-40, where Jesus Christ calmed a storm that was about to sink a boat. Nabena noted that instead of complaining or blaming the captain of the boat, Jesus prayed and calmed the storm.

“One will wonder whom Father Mbaka is emulating because the Lord Jesus Christ did not threaten to bring down the government during his own time. In fact, Jesus Christ obeyed and honoured constituted authority. That’s why he paid his tax.

“We are calling on Father Mbaka to concentrate on his spiritual calling and stop speaking like politicians who it is obvious he (Mbaka) has been dining and wining with. If Mbaka has found another political ally, it is better to leave political message for politicians.

“Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to either resign or be impeached because of the current challenges is ungodly. Father Mbaka should not, however, take his luck too far because there are lot to tell the Vatican and the Pope about his person and his sources of inspiration.”

Nabena also called on other clerics to emulate the likes of Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Pastor WF Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Ministry and many other true men of God who will rather fast and pray to avert crisis in the country instead of threatening the government of the day.

Mbaka had said, among other things: “How can people be dying and the chief security officer of the country would be sitting down without making any comment.

“Gunmen attacking people everywhere. Buhari should have resigned honourably following his (alleged) failure as a leader. Let me tell you that if it were in a civilised country, President Buhari would have resigned by now. So, it is amazing that he has chosen to sit tight while people are dying daily.”

Fans laud Ugwuanyi’s over Rangers’ turnaround

Fans of Enugu Rangers International Football Club have paid glowing tributes to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, for his resilience towards revamping the club.

The fans who spoke during the launch of “The New Dawn,” a book one of the oldest clubs in teh country, written by Basil Ojengwa, at The Base Event Centre, Enugu, narrated with nostalgia how Gov. Ugwuanyi repositioned and gave maximum support to the club, which enable it to win the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and the 2018 NFF/AITEO Federation Cup, after 32 years without winning a trophy.

Describing the governor as a jinx breaker, the Rangers fans, said that the governor’s achievements, commitment and steadfastness in returning the club to its winning ways as well as other feats in the sport industry were legendary and unprecedented.

They added that lovers of Rangers FC all over the world are indebted to the governor for resuscitating the club’s ‘Never Say Die’ spirit, which according to them, was the pride of the Igbo man, after the Civil War.

Reviewing the book, the member representing Ezeagu Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze, highlighted that the author narrated “the contributions of a great leader (Ugwuanyi) who can best be described as a peaceful leader, lover of football, silent achiever and a consensus builder.”

The lawmaker explained that the five-chapter book also dwelt on the evolution of football and football clubs, the advent of football in Africa as well as the metamorphosis of the name Rangers “through a military name used during the Nigerian Civil War”, among other narratives.

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi who expressed delight at the event, said that he was evoked by “the reminiscence of the rich history and career trajectory of Rangers International football Club”, when he received the invitation for the book launch.

Germany set to return Benin Bronzes 125 years after looting by British soldiers

Our Reporter

Germany is set to return 440 of Benin Bronzes that were looted 125 years ago by a British colonial expedition and subsequently sold to collections around the world, including German museums, Berlin authorities said on Friday.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas welcomed a deal reached with museums to work on a plan for the restitution of the artifacts together with Nigeria, calling it a “turning point in dealing with our colonial history.”

Culture Minister Monika Gruetters, said the Benin Bronzes were a key test for the way the country deals with its colonial past.

“We are confronting our historic and moral responsibility,” she said.

Gruetters said the goal is to contribute to “understanding and reconciliation” with the descendants of those whose cultural treasures were stolen in colonial times. The first returns are planned for next year, she said.

A British colonial expedition plundered vast numbers of treasures from the royal palace of the Kingdom of Benin in 1897, including numerous bas-reliefs and sculptures. Many of the artifacts ended up in the British Museum, though hundreds were also sold to other collections.

The Ethnological Museum in Berlin has one of the world’s largest collection of historical objects from the Kingdom of Benin, estimated to include about 530 items, including 440 bronzes.

The University of Aberdeen and Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, are among the British institutions which have so far announced their intention to send back their Benin Bronzes.

The Scottish university claimed that the bronzes had been seized in ‘reprehensible circumstances.’

That decision put pressure on the British Museum, which holds hundreds of the pieces, to follow suit.

Late last year, France approved the restitution of 26 items from the Kingdom of Benin.

Britain’s Acting Consul-General in the Niger Delta, James Phillips had, in December 1896, embarked on an expedition to depose the then Oba of Benin Ovonramwen, because he had “reason to hope that sufficient ivory would be found in the King’s house.”

Phillips,in a letter  to Lord Salisbury, the Foreign Secretary , intended to use the funds realized from the ivory to “pay the expenses incurred in removing the King from his stool.”

He was accompanied by  a medical officer, two trading agents and about  250 African soldiers masquerading as porters.

Phillips also sent a deceptive message to Ovonramwen about his visit to discuss ‘peace and trade’.

The Oba suggested that the trip be postponed because of an impending national festival but Phillips would not hear of it only for him and his accomplices to run into an ambush laid by Edo warriors.

All perished in the ambush save Captain Alan Maxwell Boisragon, Commandant of the Constabulary of the Niger Coast Protectorate and Ralph Locke, District Commissioner of Warri.

A few days later Britain sent a force of around 1,200 Royal Marines, sailors and troops from the Niger Coast Protectorate Forces led by Rear-Admiral Harry Rawson to sack Benin.

This time the invaders overwhelmed the Benin warriors and destroyed almost everything on their part.

The Oba’s palace was looted and hundreds of priceless artefacts were shipped back to England, hundreds were later sold to other colonial powers throughout Europe and America.

FG declares custodial centres red zones

By Blessing Olaifa, Abuja

The Federal Government on Friday ordered squadron commanders to use maximum force to henceforth defend custodial centres across the country.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who gave the order, declared custodial centres across Nigeria as red flag zones for any form of attacks or intrusion.

He said whoever attempts to attack any centre henceforth would regret it as the Federal Government would no longer tolerate attacks on the facilities.

Aregbesola warned that the commanders would be held responsible should there be any “successful “attacks on any facility, asserting that they were armed in order to defend the facilities.

The Minister sounded the warnings while addressing squadron commanders at the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abuja.

In his speech tagged “inviolable custodial centres“ Aregbesola said the centres are the symbols of Nigeria authority and sovereignty and therefore would be defended at all cost.

Aregbesola said: ”This meeting is very important considering the security challenges we face in the country at the moment.

“It is not in dispute that attempts are always made to compromise the integrity of the custodial centres – from within or without or simultaneously. This ranges from the mild to the very serious, with varying degrees of success.

“Earlier this month, there was an attack, the worst of its kind, on the Owerri custodial centre. During the #ENDSARS riots of late last year, there were coordinated attacks on custodial centres in Edo State, while an unsuccessful attempt was made in Lagos.

“ It should be clear that a pattern of attack on custodial centres is emerging, in which the current security challenges are being used to stage attacks on our facilities.

“Let me commend you for your professionalism, diligence and sacrifice in the performance of your duty which have upheld the integrity of our custodial centres.

“Some of the escaped inmates from Edo have been arrested for committing murder and other crimes. One in particular went after those who provided the witness for his conviction.

“The custodial facilities are a symbol of the authority of the Nigerian State. They are sacred and inviolable institutions. You will notice that they are usually built around military fortresses, to show how important they are.

“This is to deter would-be attackers from inside or outside. More importantly, you are armed and positioned to directly guard them and defend their integrity. Your mission is to defend the facilities at all cost. Let me repeat again, defend them at all cost.

“You are empowered by the highest authority in the land to use every means necessary to defend the custodial centres against internal and external aggression.

“The weapons you carry and the instrument you have are to be lawfully deployed for maximum effect, in protecting the facilities. Anyone or group of persons that decide(s) to attack them should live to regret it.”

First flight lands in new Anambra airport

By Nwanosike Onu, Awka and Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

  • We borrowed no dime for project, says Governor Obiano

  • Air Peace boss weeps after landing

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, and the people of the state were ecstatic on Friday when the first flight landed at the state’s cargo and passenger airport.

The three aircrafts that landed at the airport were on the fleet of Air Peace Airlines owned by one of the sons of Anambra State, Chief Allen Onyema.

The aircraft Air Peace 5N-BUJ landed at about 2.30pm while Air Peace 5N-BVD landed at 2.47 to test run the yet to be completed airport.

Obiano, while addressing the crowd, described the airport as a revolution in the aviation industry, saying it took his administration 15 months to arrive at 85 per cent completion.

He revealed that the airport with 3.7 runway, 11-storey building tower, and other facilities was built with no loan borrowed to finance it

He added that it was the most audacious legacy of his administration, adding that it would serve as the best bridge to attract investors to the state.

Obiano said: “The Awka Stadium is also almost ready. Very soon, local and international flights will start landing and taking off in Anambra.”

On his part, the owner of the aircraft, Chief Allen Onyema, who was on board the first aircraft to land at the airport, described it as the biggest and best in Africa.

He said he wept immediately he landed because he never knew the dream of an airport would become a reality in Anambra State.

He said: “I’ve been vindicated today after boasting on TV that the airport will soon be completed, which attracted condemnation from some people.

”I thank the FG for approving this airport, which is the fastest to be approved as a testament of the quality of job done here. This is the best and longest runway in Africa with 3.7km.”

He added that the airport would not serve Anambra people alone but the South East and the entire country.

“In less no time, President Muhammadu Buhari is going to approve this airport as an international one, which would create millions of jobs for the people as well as energise the nation’s economy,” he said.

NSA: Buhari vows ‘profound measures’ to end insecurity

By Bolaji Ogundele, Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja and AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

  • Crucial meeting with security top brass to reconvene Tuesday

  • 4,566 killed, 2,860 abducted in 2020 – Report

  • Bandits kill 323, kidnap 949 in three months in Kaduna

  • Boko Haram attacks another Yobe town

  • Shake-up in police over insecurity as IGP redeploys Anambra CP, others

President Muhammadu Buhari is considering taking ‘profound measures’ to tackle the surge in banditry and similar criminal activities across the country following an emergency meeting with security top brass in Abuja on Friday.

The meeting which had in attendance Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha;  Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; National Security Adviser (NSA), Major-General Babagana Monguno and  the service chiefs will reconvene on Tuesday to discuss the worsening insecurity.

The meeting came on a day Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) reported that 4,556 persons were violently killed and 2,860 were kidnapped in 2020 alone in Nigeria while the Kaduna State Government said bandits operating in the state killed a total of 323 residents and kidnapped 949 others in the last three months.

The police hierarchy has named Mr. Christopher Owolabi as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) of Anambra State as the first step in re-ordering, overhauling and strengthening the security and policing architecture in the South-East and South-South.

The United Kingdom says it is also concerned by the situation in Nigeria with its Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, stressing that the stability of Nigeria matters a lot to his country.

National Security Adviser Babagana Monguno, in a statement at the end of yesterday’s meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said the Buhari administration was prepared to do whatever is required to free the country from the current debilitating security crisis.

Monguno said yesterday’s meeting came about because of the President’s concern about “the persisting security challenges in parts of the country” and his determination to “frontally confront the situation.”

He said: “At today’s (yesterday’s) meeting, the President made it abundantly clear that while the insurgents, bandits and criminals are still at it, he has no doubt that the Nigerian security agencies and all of us as a nation will certainly overcome all the current security problems and defeat the forces of evil marauding about in different parts of the country.

“While the criminals continue to test the will of the Nigerian government, the President and the Council, which adjourned today’s critical meeting until Tuesday morning to receive further briefings from the Security Chiefs, are set and determined to decisively end the assault on the nation and will do all that it takes.

“Mr. President is very prepared to take profound measures in the wider interest of the people and the Nigerian nation. There shall be no relenting until peace and security is significantly restored in our communities.”

Also at the meeting were Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Ishiaka Amoo;acting Police Inspector-General Usman Alkali Baba; Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Samuel Adebayo.

The President had come under severe pressure from various stakeholders including the National Assembly, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other Nigerians to take urgent and drastic action to deal with the security challenges, especially kidnapping, killing, arson and agitations for secession.

4,556 violently killed, 2,860 kidnapped in Nigeria in 2020 – CISLAC

A non-governmental organisation, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), quoting a report, said yesterday that 4,556 persons were violently killed while 2,860 were kidnapped across Nigeria in 2020.

The figures, according to CISLAC Executive Director Auwal Rafsanjani, represent 43 and 100 per cent respectively over those of 2019.

He said: “The Global Rights Nigeria Country office in its Mass Atrocities Casualties Tracking Report revealed that about 4,556 persons died in 2020 from violence related killings, a number which represents a spike of about 43% from 3188 persons in 2019.

“According to the US-based Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Nigeria witnessed a total of 2,860 kidnappings in 2020, which was up from 1,386 in 2019, an increase of over 100%. Sadly, this year is on track to reach new heights in violent crime.

“The current crime rate in Nigeria is at an extremely high level, including crimes such as kidnappings, banditry and drug abuse and trafficking.”

This trend, he said, “calls to question the effectiveness of the institutions, agencies and their leadership charged with the duty of fighting crime.”

Continuing, he said: “Why have criminal justice officials been largely unable to tackle the issue of high crime rates in the country is the question on the lips of many Nigerians, even with the current unrest in the country.

“It is apparent that the welfare of criminal justice officers plays a strong role in determining their efficiency. Other factors are the corruption in the system, political interference, and others.

“An under resourced security system fueled by corruption and lack of adequate allocation police agency is incapable of effectively policing a country as big and populous as Nigeria, not to talk of carrying out such duties in a civilised fashion.”

Bandits kill 323, kidnap 949 in Kaduna within three months

Also in Kaduna on Friday, the state government reported that bandits operating in the state killed a total of 323 residents and kidnapped 949 others within the last three months across the state.

Internal Security and Home Affairs Commissioner Samuel Aruwan, while presenting a report of the security situation in the state for the first quarter of 2021, said 64 bandits were neutralised during the same period.

Many others were arrested.

The report covers banditry, kidnapping, cattle-rustling, attacks, and reprisal attacks.

He said: “The report also includes the aerial missions conducted over identified bandit hideouts and locations across the state, during which multiple scores of bandits were engaged and neutralised, with their camps destroyed.

“Deaths linked to banditry, violent attacks, communal clashes and reprisals in the first quarter total 323 across the State. Of this, 20 were women and 11 were minors.

“Out of the 323 citizens killed, 292 were males. All the 236 of the deaths occurred in Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Igabi, Giwa and Kajuru LGAs.

“Birnin Gwari recorded the highest figure of 77 deaths, followed by Chikun with 52, Igabi 45, Giwa 42, Kajuru 20 deaths in the first quarter.

“Southern Kaduna Senatorial District had 68 deaths in total, of which five were women and two below the age of 18.

“Kajuru had 28 deaths, followed by Zangon Kataf with 14 and Kagarko with 12

“And the Northern senatorial zone is the least affected with 19 people killed and Zaria has the highest casualty of six.

“Multiple scores of bandits were neutralised via about 150 targeted aerial missions conducted by the Nigeria Air Force. These missions were initiated based on credible intelligence of bandit activity and locations of camps, which were targeted and destroyed.

“Several gunrunners have been intercepted and arrested with arms and ammunition recovered in the first quarter. 36 AK47 Rifles, 1959 rounds of live ammunition and one rocket propelled grenade were recovered.

“Vigorous investigations are ongoing towards dismantling more gun-running networks and block arms routes into the state, as these are central to the perpetuation of violence and armed banditry, through the trade in small arms and light weapons.”

Government sympathised with individuals and groups who have suffered terrible losses and untold hardship as a result of the violence and insecurity.

He also spoke of government’s determination to intensify efforts towards enduring peace and security across the State.

Shake-up in police over insecurity as IGP redeploys Anambra CP, others

Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba yesterday named Mr. Christopher Owolabi as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of Anambra State as part of the ongoing efforts at re-ordering, overhauling and strengthening the security and policing architecture the South-East and South-South.

A highly-placed police source said the move was in response to the unending security situation in the South-East and South-South which has led to the killing of many people.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, in a statement said the redeployment was ultimately designed to improve the operational efficiency of the commands and enhance public safety and security.

CP Chris Owolabi takes over from CP Monday Bala Kuryas who has been redeployed to the Anti-Fraud Section of the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos.

Mba said: “In a similar vein, the IGP has ordered the posting of other strategic and tactical commanders within the zones. A total of two (2) Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), fourteen (14) Assistant Commissioners of Police and other mid-level officers were affected”.

The IGP charged the new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State to take adequate measures in consolidating and improving on the gains of his predecessor.

He advised the new CP to rejig the security apparatus of the state, harness the full potential of the command, its workforce, assets and stakeholders to advance the collective safety of all citizens.

Benue to Presidency: Ortom deserves commendation not condemnation

By Uja Emmanuel, Makurdi with agency report

The Benue State Government on Friday said that Governor Samuel Ortom deserved commendation and not condemnation in his handling of the crisis in the state.

The government was reacting to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, on Thursday expressing disappointment and sadness that the governor was blaming President Muhammadu Buhari for the killings in the state.

Shehu, in the statement, said Buhari was pained by the killings but sad that that the governor would blame the attacks on the President.

The presidential spokesman also said Buhari expressed “disappointment and sadness to hear Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, make a litany of accusations against his person and his government following the recent unfortunate incidents in the state.”

Shehu added that “no responsible government takes pleasure in such events as the killing of the military and that of innocent citizens taking refuge in an internally displaced people’s camp.”

It added: “The lives of fellow citizens should not be desecrated by deploying them in political diatribe which unfortunately appeared to be the intent of the string of emotional attacks and blame laid at the doors of the President for those killings by Governor Ortom.”

However, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Governor Ortom, Terver Akase, in a statement he signed on behalf of the governor yesterday, stated that President Buhari could not have authorised Shehu’s statement, saying that what Governor Ortom deserved was commendation and not condemnation.

He also described Shehu’s statement as reckless and insensitive.

Akase’s statement reads: “We read the statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in which he said President Muhammadu Buhari had expressed ‘his disappointment and sadness to hear Samuel Ortom, the Governor of Benue State make a litany of accusations against his person and his government following the recent unfortunate incidents in the state.’

“Shehu was referring to Governor Ortom’s clarion call on the President to act decisively and in an unbiased manner to end the spate of killings by Fulani herdsmen in Benue and other parts of the country.

“We are convinced that Mr President was not aware that his aide Shehu made such a statement on his behalf. It is clear that the media aide didn’t speak for the President in the said statement. President Buhari wouldn’t have given approval for such a reckless and insensitive press release.

“What is wrong with Governor Ortom’s call on the President to address the nation, convene a national security summit and declare a state of emergency on security, following the spate of killings taking place in Benue and the remaining states of the federation?

“Governor Ortom is not the only one who is worried by the worsening security situation in the country and has called on the President to rise to his responsibilities by declaring a state of emergency on security and convening a summit to address the numerous security challenges bedeviling the nation.

“Many other Nigerians of good conscience have at different times made similar calls. What the Governor therefore deserves is commendation and not condemnation.

“If Garba Shehu claims that the President is disappointed in the Benue State Governor for speaking against the sustained attacks on his people, we wonder how he feels about the killings in North East, North West, South East, South West and other parts of the North Central. Are those killings occurring as a result of the comments of governors of the affected states?

“It is shocking that Shehu would make a statement regarding an attack evidently carried out by Fulani herdsmen and there won’t be a single sentence of reproach directed at the violent Fulani herders. Such a deliberate omission smacks of complicity and tacit support for the killer herders.

“Shehu is aware that Governor Ortom has on several occasions raised the alarm against the activities of rampaging herdsmen whose sole aim is to take over the ancestral lands of Benue people and other Nigerians.

“The Governor has written letters to the Federal Government and made other spirited efforts to have the government at the centre take preventive measures against further attacks on Benue communities.

“The Federal Government has repeatedly ignored such patriotic calls, insisting rather that cattle routes of the 1950s be re-opened to grant easy passage to the pastoralists and their animals.

“The posture of the Federal Government has made many Nigerians to conclude that it is complicit and its inaction has emboldened the armed herdsmen to cause greater havoc across the country.

“The President is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. The job of a governor is to support security agencies to perform their duties, and this Governor Ortom has done efficiently to the admiration of many Nigerians.

“When President Buhari gave a shoot on sight order to security agencies against persons bearing AK-47, Governor Ortom was one of the first to support the presidential directive.

“Minister of Defence came out a few weeks later to counter the President’s order and we expected a reaction from the Presidency, but till this minute, no such reaction has been heard.

“What Garba Shehu ought to know is that Governor Ortom has no personal grudge against the President. The Governor is only being patriotic by calling for justice, equity, fairness and above all the rule of law.

“He expects the President to be the leader of every Nigerian and treat all as his people.”

Barcelona’s Koeman banned for Atletico Madrid

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has been hit with a two-game ban by the Spanish FA after being shown a red card in Thursday’s shock 2-1 defeat at home to Granada and will miss the visit of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid next Saturday.

The Dutchman’s suspension starts with Sunday’s trip to his former club Valencia as Barca look to bounce back from the loss to Granada, which means the Catalans no longer have the destiny of the title in their own hands.

Koeman was dismissed in the aftermath of Darwin Machis’s 63rd minute equaliser for Granada at the Nou Camp.

In his post-game report the referee said the Barca coach, having already been warned about his conduct, spoke degradingly to the fourth official, shouting “What a character” at him.

Klopp to miss six players against Man United

Jurgen Klopp will once again have to select a makeshift back four as Liverpool prepare to visit Old Trafford.

Manchester United warmed-up for Sunday afternoon’s meeting against their old rivals with a memorable 6-2 win over Roma in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Doubles from Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani put United on the verge of a place in the Gdansk showpiece.

Those strikes came after Lorenzo Pellegrini (pen) and former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko had Italian visitors Roma 2-1 to the good at half-time of the first leg.

However, the hosts responded through Fernandes and Cavani, while Paul Pogba and substitute Mason Greenwood later got themselves in on the act.

Liverpool were without a midweek fixture ahead of their trip to the same venue on Sunday afternoon.

He joins long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez (both knee) on the sidelines, while fellow defender Joel Matip (ankle) and captain Jordan Henderson (groin) are not yet fit enough to return, either.

Asked if there was any change to his injury list, manager Klopp said, “No, no, all the same in this moment.”
